About Jan

My husband, Fred Reuning, and I moved to Minnetonka almost 30 years ago, in 1987.  Our three children were all educated in the Minnetonka School District and are graduates of Minnetonka High School. We also have three grandchildren, two of whom live in the Sixth District.

My involvement with local government began when I responded to a notice in the Sun Sailor for volunteers to serve on Minnetonka’s Board of Zoning Adjustment. After serving there, I was appointed to the Planning Commission and became chair. In 1993, I was elected to my first term on the Minnetonka City Council and served as an at-large councilmember until 2005 when I was elected mayor.  In 2008, I was elected to the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners and re-elected in 2012.

I currently chair the County Board, as well as serving on the following boards or committees:

  • Member of the Board of Directors of Hennepin Healthcare System (Hennepin County Medical Center);
  • Vice-Chair of the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority;
  • Chair of Southwest LRT Community Works Committee;
  • Vice-Chair of the Solid Waste Management Coordinating Board;
  • Chair of the Metropolitan Building Commission;
  • Member of Greater MSP; and
  • Member of the Mosquito Control District.

I also serve on the board of directors of Relate.

Professionally, I have an undergraduate degree from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University and a law degree from Harvard.  I have practiced law, taught as an adjunct professor at William Mitchell College of Law and worked as the executive director of a non-profit in the housing area.
